A box decomposition algorithm to compute the hypervolume indicator

چکیده
We propose a new approach to the computation of the hypervolume indicator, based on partitioning the dominated region into a set of axis-parallel hyperrectangles or boxes. We present a nonincremental algorithm and an incremental algorithm, which allows insertions of points, whose time complexities are O(nb p−1 2 c+1) and O(nb p 2 c+1), respectively. While the theoretical complexity of such a method is lower bounded by the complexity of the partition, which is, in the worst-case, larger than the best upper bound on the complexity of the hypervolume computation, we show that it is practically efficient. In particular, the nonincremental algorithm competes with the currently most practically efficient algorithms. Finally, we prove an enhanced upper bound of O(np−1) and a lower bound of Ω(nb p 2 c log n) for p ≥ 4 on the worst-case complexity of the WFG algorithm.

A Fast Dimension-Sweep Algorithm for the Hypervolume Indicator in Four Dimensions
The Hypervolume Indicator is one of the most widely used quality indicators in Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization. Its computation is a special case of Klee’s Measure Problem (KMP) where the upper end of all rectangular ranges coincides with a given reference point (assuming minimization, without loss of generality). Although the time complexity of the hypervolume indicator in two and thr...
متن کاملA Fast Approximate Hypervolume Calculation Method by a Novel Decomposition Strategy
In this paper, we present a new method to fast approximate the hypervolume measurement by improving the classical Monte Carlo sampling method. Hypervolume value can be used as a quality indicator or selection indicator for multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs), and thus the efficiency of calculating this measurement is of crucial importance especially in the case of large sets or many ...
متن کاملRobustness in Hypervolume-based Multiobjective Search
The use of quality indicators within the search has become a popular approach in the field of evolutionary multiobjective optimization. It relies on the concept to transform the original multiobjective problem into a set problem that involves a single objective function only, namely a quality indicator, reflecting the quality of a Pareto set approximation. Especially the hypervolume indicator h...
متن کاملApproximation quality of the hypervolume indicator
In order to allow a comparison of (otherwise incomparable) sets, many evolutionary multiobjective optimizers use indicator functions to guide the search and to evaluate the performance of search algorithms. The most widely used indicator is the hypervolume indicator. It measures the volume of the dominated portion of the objective space bounded from below by a reference point. Though the hyperv...
متن کاملHypE: An Algorithm for Fast Hypervolume-Based Many-Objective Optimization
In the field of evolutionary multi-criterion optimization, the hypervolume indicator is the only single set quality measure that is known to be strictly monotonic with regard to Pareto dominance: whenever a Pareto set approximation entirely dominates another one, then the indicator value of the dominant set will also be better. This property is of high interest and relevance for problems involv...
